Why You Shouldn't Take Advice from Agents Trying to Leave the Business (or Become Coaches)

When you’re building a real estate career, who you take advice from matters a lot. Unfortunately, not everyone giving advice is qualified to steer you in the right direction. Some might actually be pointing you off course on purpose to further their own agenda.

It’s an unfortunate reality that many agents who are actively trying to exit the business — whether by pivoting into coaching, consulting, or entirely new industries — often have motivations that no longer align with succeeding in real estate. If someone is trying to make their money by selling you coaching programs, speaking engagements, or vague “success systems” rather than by selling homes, you need to step back and ask: Are they actually succeeding at the very thing I’m trying to master?

Real estate is tough. It takes perseverance, skill, and focus to consistently succeed year after year. Agents who pivot into coaching (without a strong, consistent track record themselves) or start bad-mouthing the industry on their way out often do so because they struggled to build a sustainable career. Their advice is inevitably shaped by that experience — meaning it can be colored by frustration, negativity, and the pursuit of personal gain over your professional success.
